South Bend adds MET bachelor's degree

Purdue College of Technology South Bend now offers a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technology (MET).

Purdue is the only public institution in the Michiana area offering this degree. Many local companies wrote letters of support to offer the degree in South Bend because of the demand for graduates in the community. More than 80 percent of Purdue's South Bend graduates remain in the area working for local companies.

“Graduates of this program will be prepared to serve in technical and management roles such as manufacturing engineers, designers or test engineers,” said Michael Sanders, director of Purdue College of Technology South Bend. “Many careers in this field now require a bachelor’s degree for initial placement.”

Other potential job titles for students who graduate with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technology include mechanical engineer, production engineer, application engineer, quality engineer or project engineer. The most recent average starting salary of Purdue graduates in this program is $52,525.

“A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technology is great preparation for a wide range of technical and management careers at local companies,” said Sarah Leach, associate professor of mechanical engineering technology. “It is also a solid foundation for lifelong learning and specialization.”

The South Bend location now offers five bachelor’s degree programs: electrical engineering technology, engineering technology, industrial technology, mechanical engineering technology and organizational leadership and supervision.
