Dr. James L. Mohler is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Diversity in the College of Technology (CoT) and Professor of Computer Graphics Technology (CGT) at Purdue University. Dr. Mohler began his academic career in 1992 and was promoted to professor in 2009. He has served in the following administrative roles over the last 10 years: 2002‐2003, Senior Research Scientist of Multimedia and Web Development in Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP); 2003‐2005, Director of the ITaP Informatics Group; 2008‐2009, Assistant Department Head, CGT; 2009‐2011, Associate Department Head, CGT; 2011 (June through October), Interim Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and 2011‐2012, Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs & Diversity. Dr. Mohler is a Purdue University Faculty Scholar, a member of the Purdue University Teaching Academy and a past faculty fellow for the Discovery Learning Center and Owen and Tarkington Residence Halls. Dr. Mohler is also a Guest Professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, P.R. China and typically teaches limited duration short courses every fall.
In his current role as Associate Dean, Dr. Mohler oversees and coordinates the CoT’s various M.S., Ph.D., and undergraduate programs. He also oversees all college standing committees,
accreditation activities, undergraduate academic advising, and college‐level diversity and recruiting endeavors. As well he teaches graduate courses on research methods, perception
and visual intelligence, and university honors courses on various computer graphics topics. He has or continues to work with 11 PhD students and 20 MS students as committee chair and
Dr. Mohler has authored, co‐authored, or contributed to over a 20 texts related to computer graphics and interactive media and over 60 papers and workshops at various conferences. He
has also authored over 71 articles for refereed, reviewed, or trade publications. He has been the recipient of over 2 million dollars in grants or in‐kind donations since 1992. Dr. Mohler has served on the review board of the WebNet Journal and as the Executive Editor for the Journal of Interactive Instruction Development. He is a member or past member of ACM, ACM SIGGRAPH, IEEE, and ASEE. Dr. Mohler was the SIGGRAPH 2005 Conference Chair and led a team of over 100 volunteers to host over 29,000 attendees in Los Angeles, California. Highlights of the conference included a keynote by George Lucas, a significant financial return to the ACM SIGGRAPH organization, and the opportunity to work with talented experts incomputer graphics from around the world.
Dr. Mohler continues active industrial involvement through external consulting as his time permits, including work performed for companies such as AutoDesk, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Caterpillar, Cummins Engine Company, Electronic Arts, Fairfield Manufacturing Company, GM Powertrain, McGraw‐Hill Publishers, Macmillan Computer Publishing, Purdue University, Rockwell Automation, and State Farm Insurance.
