Matt is the Statewide Director of Research and Innovation. In this capacity he works across Indiana to broaden faculty and student research, innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization opportunities and capabilities, to provide students with transformative experiences in research and innovation that are aligned with the needs of industry and society, to build collaborative research, innovation, and internship opportunities with stakeholders across Indiana, and to develop the statewide vision for the Purdue Polytechnic Institute (PPI). Matt previously served as Director of Purdue’s College of Technology at Lafayette. In this capacity he was the senior Purdue University administrative officer, built program enrollment, supervised student services, represented the college and the university in all economic and community development activities, coordinated program accreditation activities, maintained alumni relations, and handled all community relations with business, industry, public schools, and other post-secondary institutions in concert with Purdue University and institutions for the location.
Previously Matt was the founding Managing Director of Tech Ventures at Purdue University. In this capacity, Matt advised student and faculty start-ups, identified innovative technologies, built strategic relationships, engaged the technology and entrepreneurial community, handled business affairs and built a course series and mentor network. While with Purdue, Matt has served as a National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovation Corps (i-Corps) business mentor, been certified as a Lean LaunchPad educator, and was granted a business acceleration fellowship with Connect Springboard; a west coast technology accelerator. He serves on the boards of four companies. On the side, Matt provides strategy, IT advisory services and economic development consulting for businesses.
In his first position at Purdue, Matt was responsible for corporate sponsored programs and industrial and government engagement for the College of Technology. While in this role, Matt helped triple research funding and started a collaborative faculty and industry based alternative aviation fuel center. In addition to his background in academia, high tech, industry, economic development and government, Matt has extensive international and entrepreneurial experience. Matt’s last manager at Procter & Gamble (P&G) asked Matt to join him at CMS-Katra as CEO of Katra Healthcare USA. During a successful technology and management career at P&G, Matt started Procter & Gamble’s operation in Portugal. He also founded and sold high tech firms in Europe and the USA. Matt has led international trade missions to Europe and Asia, launched a successful certified technology park, formed a state-wide economic development organization for growing technology entrepreneurship, and conducted research for turning more university research into commercializable opportunities.
Matt served the people of Kokomo as mayor where he pulled the city out of what the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns said was the worst financial crisis to hit any Indiana city and was recognized by the US Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities for quality of life improvements. Matt also earned a fellowship on “Governing in the Global Age” at the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University. Matt graduated with highest distinction from Purdue University and was later honored by Purdue as a 2005 Distinguished Alumnus
