The next phase of Polytechnic excellence

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about excellence and what it means to be excellent. Different people define excellence differently, and I have yet to come across a method to measure excellence. Is it something tangible or a feeling? I think it is both, and I think we are experiencing excellence in the Polytechnic Institute but are often too modest to brag about it.

The model is working: 50 Purdue Polytechnic High School students earn college admission

It does not seem possible, but the very first seniors from Purdue Polytechnic High School (PPHS) will graduate soon. Four years ago, we created the high school with two objectives: to offer an alternative learning environment designed to better prepare students for today’s workplace, and to increase significantly the disproportionately low number of underrepresented students who apply to and are admitted to Purdue.

The intersection of my backgrounds in engineering design, manufacturing and STEM education has given rise to a transdisciplinary way of thinking. Manufacturing is going through a transformation that is sometimes referred to as Industry 4.0, which applies digital transformation technologies (AI/ML, data and data analytics, IoT, and cloud computing) to the design and manufacturing process.
