'Priming the pipeline' with Indy high school

BizVoiceThe March/April 2016 issue of BizVoice, published by the Indiana Chamber, focuses on the landscape-changing initiatives at Purdue University since Mitch Daniels became president of Purdue University.

As part of its coverage, the magazine included a feature article on the planned Purdue Polytechnic Indianapolis High School, which is slated to open in Fall 2017.

Gary Bertoline, dean of the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, explained to the magazine why the college is involved in creating a charter school.

“There’s just a tremendous amount of evidence that says if you take a more application-oriented, hands-on, integrated approach that’s team based, where students learn from other students, and you mentor students, … that you can prepare students much better. They learn better. They’re much more motivated,” he said.

Ahmed Young, director of the Office of Education Innovation for the city of Indianapolis, and David Harris, founder and CEO of The Mind Trust, provide a larger context for how the school can fit into the educational landscape in Indianapolis and the state. The story also includes an explanation of competency-based education.
