Visiting Scholars Series presents Made in Sweden: An Exploration of Swedish Design and Culture

Eva HartellIt’s the country that brought you Ikea, Spotify, Skype and Volvo. Explore Swedish design and culture in an interactive workshop hosted by Eva Hartell, Ph.D., of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. The two-hour workshop is Thursday, March 29, 2018, at 3 p.m. in Honors College and Residences North (HCRN) 1145.

Workshop attendees will take part in the same types of design activities that students in the Swedish K-12 school system experience in their country’s compulsory subject of technology. “In Sweden, the technology subject helps pupils develop their technical expertise and technical awareness to orient themselves and act in a technologically intensive world,” explained Greg Strimel, assistant professor of engineering/technology teacher education. “The core contents of this subject include mechanics, materials, electronics, automatic control, technological systems, product development, design, and technology’s relation to the sciences, society and the fine arts.”

Eva Hartell holds a Ph.D. in the area of classroom assessment in STEM. She has extensive experience in school-based research, working directly with teachers, schools and municipalities. She works at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and is collaborating with Strimel and the Polytechnic to establish a study abroad program in Stockholm entitled “Global Leadership in Design & Innovation.”

Participants are invited to discover why Sweden is viewed as a leader in innovation and design. The workshop is presented by the Honors College and Purdue Polytechnic’s Department of Technology, Leadership and Innovation.
