The human resource development (HRD) undergraduate program created by Purdue Polytechnic’s Department of Technology Leadership and Innovation has been accepted by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). The acceptance signifies the program’s alignment with SHRM’s standards for degree-based coursework in human resources. Furthermore, Polytechnic students graduating from the program will be waived the minimum two-year, HR-related work requirement, enabling them to take the SHRM Certified Professional exam upon graduation from the program.

Mesut Akdere, associate professor of human resource development, director of the Purdue HRD Virtual Lab and the founding faculty of the major, says the program’s acceptance by SHRM is a milestone.

“Acceptance into the SHRM program demonstrates academic excellence in successfully preparing students to achieve career readiness and effectively prepare our students to obtain HR jobs,” said Akdere. “This makes our graduates even more competitive in the workforce.”

SHRM developed the HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates to define the minimum HR content areas that should be studied by HR students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The guidelines are part of SHRM’s academic initiative to define HR education standards taught in universities and help universities develop degree programs that follow these standards. SHRM is responsible for acknowledging more than 400 programs in approximately 375 educational institutions throughout the world.
